Value Your Employees and They Will Go Above and Beyond
As a manager, one of your responsibilities is to help your team members grow. By understanding and valuing team members’ opinions, a manager can create a stronger relationship within his/her team and give employees confidence in themselves and in their work. Creating this environment not only satisfies your team members, but also creates a sense of empowerment in their jobs.
In an article from Forbes, it states that “Employees who feel valued and appreciated by their leaders are infinitely more likely to go above and beyond for the company and hold themselves accountable for their part of a project.” By positively reinforcing that their opinions and ideas are valued, the manager creates a stronger relationship with the employee while also promoting their growth, voice, and accountability as part of a team.
Try These Strategies to Show You Value Team Members’ Opinions and Ideas:
1. Listen to the employee’s reasoning behind why they did something.
Try This: “Tell me more about your decision to do it that way.”
2. Before jumping to criticizing, ask questions in a positive way.
Try This: “How do you think we should handle this better?”
3. Encourage contributions by seeking solutions to a problem.
Try This: “What other ideas do you have to solve this issue?”
4. Focus on behavior rather than attitude or opinions.
Try This: “The way we are handling our calls are resulting in a 20% complaint rate. What are your thoughts on how we can improve the situation?”
Tapping into a team member’s ideas gives them practice at trying new ideas and it shows that you value their opinions and work. When something goes wrong, instead of jumping at the opportunity to scold the employee, take a step back and approach the situation in a level-headed manner. While employees don’t need a hand-holding, boosting their self-esteem and promoting a positive environment when employees speak up will maintain an open and trusted atmosphere in the workplace.
