Practice Does Not Make Perfect


Practice makes permanent. Practicing leadership skills helps develop a comfort level and confidence that engages teams. During our classroom and on-line training, we build in practice sessions because we know that great leaders get better over time.

Author, Ryan Carson says, “If you’re willing to do a little bit of work and look a little bit dumb, there is nothing you can’t achieve.” We are all afraid of looking dumb, making a mistake and not being perfect. Get over that! If you want to be a great leader, it won’t happen in a day or even a week or a month. You need to practice, make mistakes and be your authentic self.

Here are some strategies you can practice this week:

  • When having a discussion with an employee or co-worker, don’t make it personal. Focus on facts; not feelings. Discuss actions and behaviors you want to see. Don’t assume anything. Take less than 2 minutes to refresh your memory from this blog, Keeping it Professional When Things Get Personal.

  • You can be the boss who everyone wants to work with. Put one-on-ones on the calendar. If an employee makes a mistake, do more training or re-directing. Embrace practicing leadership skills to create habits you’ll have for a lifetime. Your teammates will be more engaged, you’ll all be more productive and you’ll have more fun!
