3 Reasons Not To Delegate

Steph and I recently led our delegating workshop for a group of super smart, energetic leaders. They understood the steps to delegating and were excited to put them into practice, and then we heard:

“I’m responsible for this project; what if it’s not done right?”

“It’s so much faster if I do it myself.”

“I don’t want to overload my teammates; they’re so busy.”

These are good excuses, but you won’t keep your employees around long. Delegating is a wonderful way to engage and motivate your teammates. Try this new self-talk:

1. “I am responsible for helping our employees grow and learn.”

Take the time to review the project with your employee and help him learn. Listen to his ideas and incorporate them where you can. Have check-in points during the process to make sure things are going as planned.

2. “I do it fast, but if I give her the right guidance, she might end up doing it faster and better than me.”

It’s true that you might be faster today, but in the long-run, your employee might have a different approach to improve on the way you do it. That makes you look good because you are involving your teammates in problem-solving and finding new ways of doing things.

3. “Our employees are super busy, but if I don’t provide other challenges and diverse work opportunities, they aren’t going to want to stay with our company.”

This new generation has the need to grow and learn. Yes, she might be overloaded, but sit down with her and determine better ways of doing her current responsibilities. Then provide opportunities for her to do different types of work.

Delegating takes some time on your part. Choose the right person for the job, determine how much you need to be involved, and provide positive feedback and redirection along the way. Your employees will enjoy being on your team when they're challenged and allowed to grow.
