My last two blogs outlined the harsh realities of becoming a manager. So this week, I'm pointing out the rewards; they can be small some days and other days the rewards can be huge. Is it worth it? Absolutely! Both professionally and personally:
Influence Company Culture - You create the environment for your team. Employees will stay at a company because of their immediate boss. You have the opportunity to make the workplace enjoyable for other people.
Develop Teammates - As a new leader, you become a coach and a mentor to those around you. Your team will look to you for guidance and feedback. You get to help others find pride in their work and bring their ideas to life. For some, this can be even more rewarding than their own growth.
Impact the Future - You may have a direct pathway to senior leadership. Open cultures will involve emerging leaders in brainstorming and decision-making. You'll have a greater chance of being heard about issues happening in your company.
Grow Personally - You are constantly learning from the many people in different roles and departments you are interacting with. You also have to stay up-to-date with market trends, leaderships skills, company updates, while attending conferences, meetings and doing research in order to make those advanced decisions. That means you are always learning and growing.
Being a manager is more than just a glorified title. It is an opportunity to make a difference in a company and in people’s lives. Being an active influencer in something bigger than yourself, is extremely rewarding.
“A leader's job is not to do the work for others, it's to help others figure out how to do it themselves, to get things done, and to succeed beyond what they thought possible.”
