Work S.M.A.R.T.er, Not Harder
First quarter is over. You had great intentions at the beginning of the year. You met with your team, got the whiteboard out, set S.M.A.R.T. goals, and agreed on quarterly action plans. Is that plan in action or did you get bogged down in emails and ineffective meetings? Here are a few strategies to keep the focus on the important goals you set:
Are your goals still relevant? Do they still help you toward your long-term strategy? Take just 45 minutes each quarter to reassess your targets and make changes when needed. That doesn’t mean you get to put them off; make sure they’re still getting you where you need and want to go.
Is your action plan a high priority? Do you spend most of your working hours doing activities that go toward your goals? Take 10 minutes each morning to make a short list of what you want to accomplish each day and make sure those accomplishments help your long-term targets.
Do you support each other to reach your goals? Are your meetings quick, efficient and focused on these goals? Take 20 just minutes each week to discuss how goals are going with your team members. Hold your teammates accountable for what they said they will do and don’t let them off the hook. Identify the things that will help your team perform better. Talk about the obstacles they’re encountering and work together to make things happen in a positive way.
Does your culture support your priorities? Do you have the right people in the right positions? Take 15 minutes each month to reflect on your culture to make it stronger. Make sure you take time to lay out expectations in terms of behavior. Define actions and behaviors that support your success. Provide on-going, daily feedback to praise employees and provide redirection when needed.
The best way to reach your short- and long-term goals is to keep them front and center for you and your team while celebrating the little wins along the way.
