Handling the "That's the Way We've Always Done It" Mentality

Working with different generations and different personalities can bring up many challenges. One of the most common we see is dealing with people who have the "that's the way we've always done it" mentality. Change is necessary in any organization, but it isn't always easy for people. The answer isn't to kick those people out of the business, but to help them through the changes. Here are some tips on how to handle this mentality:

1. Explain why the change is happening and is necessary. Show them the bigger picture. Create the desire for change.

2. Include the naysayers in decision making. Bring a mix of opinions together and prepare for their responses ahead of time.

3. If you can get a few of the naysayers to agree with you, then you are more likely to get everyone on board. Appeal to their interests and say things like "I am asking you because you have been here for so long. What do you think about this? What are the reasons we have been doing this? Let's break it down and see if it's still needed."
