The end of the year brings a lot of excitement and a lot on our calendars. Work parties followed by social gatherings, gifts to buy, vacations to attend, and year-end goals to hit. The most wonderful time of the year makes January a time when most people need a vacation from their vacation.
Those first weeks back to reality can be the hardest to stay motivated and focused. Here are a few tips to get back in the zone:
Get Organized- Identify the most important things you need to get done this month to reach your goals and write them down. Then, prioritize the list into what needs to get done first and break down the biggest tasks into simpler, actionable steps.
Ease Your Way Back In- Putting meeting after meeting on your calendar the first week back is setting yourself up for failure. Take the first few days to get back into routine. Clean out your inbox, check in with your team, organize your desk and make a plan. Tackle those new projects and brainstorming sessions after you’ve gotten a chance to get things in order.
Take Natural Breaks- If you think you can jump back into focusing for 9 hours a day after time off, you don’t know yourself very well. Our brains can only handle so much and eventually your mind will start to wander and you will be less productive. Make sure you are taking breaks throughout the day even if it is to go grab a healthy snack in the kitchen for 5 minutes. Try 2 minute breathing exercises or a walk around the office. Don’t burn yourself out the first week back.
There is no secret formula to getting back in the groove at work. Hopefully the holidays gave you enough time to get refreshed to where you are excited to get back to a routine. Be kind to yourself and give yourself some slack on getting into the swing of things. Treat your employees with the same respect and help each other get motivated again.
